Pentacles and pentagrams are used widely in many magical and spiritual practices. 

Used as a talisman or a jewellery item to imbue protection and identify one as someone who has interest in magic, occult or wicca.  

It appears in tarot decks as pentacles discs or coins and represents the element of Earth. 

It is used in ritual to invoke ( or banish ) the presence of the element of choice, different ways to draw it invoke or banish the element of choice. Also to help create protection.

It is used as a symbol drawn, engraved, embossed or painted onto wood, metal or stone to represent the element of Earth and often used to charge other items being used in spell work. 

As a symbol it has many meanings and like any spiritual practice only gets deeper and multi layered the more you work with it. However on a basic level each point represents a different direction (or element- Earth/North, Air/East, Fire/South, Water/West) and the 5th element Spirit (pentagram), with a circle round (pentacle) it conjoins for unity and harmony of these elements.
